Snap Spot: Get Photo Taking Inspiration From The iPhotography Assignment Generator

Last time on Snap Spot I shared the Pocket Spotlight, which is an affordable tool that enhances your photos in low light conditions. This week I’m going to share an app, but it’s an app that is a bit different from the typical photo editing apps that I’ve shown you in the past.
The iPhotography Assignment Generator is not for manipulating photos at all. Instead, it is an iPhone app that is designed to provide you with ideas on what to snap. It’s not always easy finding inspiration for the perfect Instagram photo, which is where this app comes in handy.
After opening the app, you can get a random photography idea or choose from a list. The Assignment Generator provides ideas in a number of categories, including Composition, Creative Thinking, Landscaping and Nature, and Fun With Light, among others.
Within these categories you will find several different photo ideas. For example, in the Creative Techniques category, there’s a suggestion on how to manipulate perspective, while the Composition category offers up ideas on framing, lines, and patterns.
The prompts that you are provided with are better described as a short tutorial. The Lines idea, for instance, explains how lines direct the way that a viewer looks at a picture, and then goes on to suggest looking at lines in the world around you to find interesting photography subjects.
Each prompt also comes with a set of accompanying photos demonstrating the technique that is described, and as the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Simply mirroring some of the pictures in the app is a great way to come up with new photo content.
You will also find some useful tips on using both the Camera+ app and Instagram within the Assignment Generator, which is handy for those of you who are new to iPhoneography.
My favorite way to use this app is to get a random tip each day, using the Daily Reminder feature. With this enabled, you will get a notification each day with a fun new photography idea, which is the perfect way to get inspiration in small, digestible doses.
You can get your own copy of the iPhotography Assignment Generator from the App Store for $0.99.
