Here Is One Apple Product That Should Be Refreshed At WWDC

May 23, 2013
Apple is probably not going to announce new iOS devices at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference. However, there is a strong likelihood that new MacBook Airs will be announced. AppleInsider recently found that half of Apple’s MacBook Air lineup is now sold out at Amazon, and at other locations. This suggests that new models are coming very soon.
Amazon is completely sold out of the 11.6-inch MacBook Air with 64 gigabytes of storage and a 1.7-gigahertz Intel Core i5 processor a handful of used and refurbished units remain in stock. Notably, the listing for the entry-level 11.6-inch model is consistent with a discontinued item on Amazon, with no indication that stock will be replenished. In contrast, the online retailer typically portrays a simple stockout with availability advertised availability advertised for "1-2 months." The 128-gigabyte version of the 11.6-inch model remains in stock for now, as does the entry-level 13-inch model. But beyond that, all MacBook Air configurations are completely out of stock at Amazon.
Similar constraints are being reported at other Apple resellers, including MacMall, MacConnection, Best Buy, and J&R. For the time being, however, Cupertino is still offering its full line of MacBook Airs through the Apple Online Store, and through store pick-up. The last time Apple refreshed its MacBook Air lineup was during last year's WWDC, so an update this time around wouldn’t be unexpected. The biggest unknown is whether the next generation laptop will come with a Retina display. To date, the MacBook Pro is the only Mac that includes this type of display. As a reminder, WWDC 2013 begins on Monday, June 10. As usual, AppAdvice will provide full coverage of the event, which begins with that morning’s keynote address by Apple CEO Tim Cook. Stay tuned.
