When It Comes To Microsoft Surface Sales, It's All About The Zeros

May 2, 2013
When Apple announces new sales numbers for iOS devices, the word “millions” comes up quite a lot. As in, there were “x” millions of iPads sold during the previous quarter. At Microsoft, they don’t use the word millions, or for that matter, million, as it relates to Surface tablet sales. Instead, then mention a few zeros. According to PC Mag, Microsoft shipped only 900,000 Surface tablets between January and March. This compared to the 19.5 million iPads that Apple shipped during the same time period. As IDC found, Windows 8-based tablets “continued to struggle to gain traction in the market.” For the quarter, Apple captured 39.6 percent of the global tablet market. Samsung followed with 17.9 percent, while Asus took 5.5 percent. Amazon's Kindle Fire was fourth at 3.7 percent. Those 900,000 Surface units shipped gave Microsoft the No. 5 spot, with 1.83 percent of the overall tablet market.
