Along with the release of iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display, Apple launched a new leather Smart Case for each device. Prior to now, the iPad Smart Case was available for iPad 2, 3, and 4, but it was made out of polyurethane and didn't seem like it fit the device very well.
Fortunately, Apple has addressed the loose fit, but now the case is only available in a leather. The leather Smart Case is nice, and overall, it looks very premium, but you're going to pay for that premium look. The iPad mini Smart Case is available for $69, while the iPad Air Smart Case retails for $79.
That being said, it's definitely a nice case if you're willing to pay for it. Check out our hands-on review of the iPad mini Smart Case:

It's also important to note that this Smart Case is compatible with the first generation iPad mini. On the backside of the iPad mini Smart Case, there's a cutout for the second microphone found on the iPad mini with Retina Display, but aside from that, you'd never know that it wasn't designed with the first generation in mind. Apple's iPad mini Smart Case definitely isn't the cheapest case on the market. In fact, you can purchase cases with more protection for half of its price. However, this is the only branded iPad case you can purchase from Apple. Sure, the iPad Smart Cover will protect the screen, but if you want full-bodied protection with an Apple logo, the Smart Case is the only way to go. I like how the Smart Case looks, but if you're on a budget, you may want to look at third party case options. Currently, Apple's iPad mini Smart Case is available in six different colors for $69.
