The New York Times Runs An Underwater iPad Air Ad At The Wrong Time
March 25, 2014
As the world continues seeking answers to the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 tragedy, The New York Times has some explaining to do. On Monday, visitors to the Gray Lady's homepage saw a large animated ad featuring divers using an Apple iPad Air underwater. The problem? The ad sat above an article with the headline, “Malaysia Says Jet Went Down In Ocean.”
According to AdWeek, the ad featuring a closing headline of "See the unique ways people are using iPad around the world," was up for two hours before being removed at around 3:30 p.m. EDT.
Naturally, Twitter was abuzz about the odd ad placement:
Rather unfortunate ad placement on the @nytimes homepage... pic.twitter.com/PbEhn9RcKo — Rosa Golijan (@rosa) March 24, 2014
I hope someone at @nytimes is aware how unacceptable the website front page is at present. pic.twitter.com/eJRoZz14bm — Ryan McAdams (@ryanmcadams_) March 24, 2014Early Monday, the Malaysian government announced that Flight 370 was likely lost at sea. The announcement came more than two weeks after the Kuala Lumpur to Beijing flight went missing with 239 passengers aboard.
