What Will Happen To The Comics App Now That Amazon Is Buying ComiXology?

April 11, 2014
Amazon is getting into the comic book business. The company has announced plans to purchase ComiXology, a leading provider of cloud-based digital comics. According to David Naggar, Amazon vice president of Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing:
We've long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers.
David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology notes:
There is no better home for ComiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.
Founded in 2007, ComiXology is best known for its popular Comics iOS app, which includes “Guided View,” a patent-pending technology for reading made-for-print comics on a tablet. The app launched on iPad in 2011 and is expected to remain on the App Store after the acquisition. Amazon is the biggest seller of books, so this acquisition makes a lot of sense. Given that Comics is one of the most profitable apps on the App Store, I don't expect much to change for iOS users thanks to this acquisition, at least in the short term. The freemium Comics app is available to download here.
