Improvements Expected As Touch ID Comes To iPad
June 23, 2014
Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanning technology should arrive on next-generation iPads later this year. When it does, the hardware behind it will see improvements, according to China Times.
The reports notes that TSMC will produce 120 million Touch IDs for Apple through the end of 2014, which is an increase of 233 percent from last year. In addition to the “iPhone 6,” the Touch ID sensor is widely rumored to arrive on this year’s iPad Air and iPad mini.
These next-generation Touch IDs will see internal upgrades that will make the device’s home button more durable. The first batch of Touch IDs will start shipping before the end of July.
Available exclusively on the iPhone 5s, Touch ID currently serves two main purposes: to protect logins and user data, and unlock Keychain items. Beginning with iOS 8, Touch ID can be used by third-party developers. Apple is also rumored to be working on a payment system, of which Touch ID will play a central part.
Apple is likely to announce new iOS devices in September and October.
