The HumanaVitality mobile app now supports Apple’s HealthKit
Humana has become one of the first health insurance providers to use Apple’s new HealthKit SDK. The company has announced that its HumanaVitality rewards program app fully supports the health-tracking feature in iOS 8.
First released in April 2014, the free app allows users to create and measure personal wellness goals. It also rewards members for meeting these goals and for other healthy behaviors.
According to Bruce Broussard, president and CEO of Humana:
The simple, innovative, and easy-to-use design of the Apple Health app makes it easier for these Humana members to collectively manage their fitness data so they can improve their health … As more consumers use Apple Health, the platform can also help the health care industry leverage the power of technology to further transform the consumer health experience.
In August, Bloomberg reported that Humana and other health insurance providers were in discussions with Apple about HealthKit.
Last week, Apple’s HealthKit was finally activated after a short delay. It is available through the iOS 8.0.2 software update. It allows third-party apps to send and receive data to Cupertino’s new Health app.
There are already a number of iPhone apps that work with the service, such as the ones we highlighted here and here.
The free HumanaVitality app is available for download on the App Store.
