The iPod shuffle may be the next Apple product to go
In September, Apple quietly retired the venerable iPod Classic. Eight days into 2015, it looks like the iPod shuffle could be the next product to go, according to 9to5Mac.
On the Apple website, iPod shuffle orders aren’t shipping for “7-10 business days.” At the same time, few Apple retail store locations currently have the $49 device in stock.
According to 9to5Mac, “Apple has warned its retail employees that Shuffle supplies will be short for an unspecified period of time and that customers seeking to buy a Shuffle via a retail store should be directed to Apple’s online store.”
First introduced in 2005, the iPod shuffle was last updated in 2010.
The fourth-generation model was originally sold in five colors, including silver, green, blue, orange, and pink. In 2012, the colors changed slightly and now include silver, space gray, green, blue, pink, yellow, and purple. A Product Red edition is also available.
The current iPod shuffle shortage could be temporary, of course. However, it might indicate that the device’s days are numbered.
The Apple Watch is expected to launch in March. As one 9to5Mac commenter noted, “Time to make shelf space for the Apple Watch.”
