On Sunday, Feb. 15, the iconic “Saturday Night Live” celebrates its 40th anniversary. To mark the occasion, NBC has released an impressive new app for iPhone, SNL.

The free app features thousands of sketches spanning the 40-season library, organized by season, episode, or cast member. It also includes an SNL emoji keyboard, and links to full episodes from the current season, which are viewable through the NBC app.

Other features include:

  • Watch never-aired videos from the vault, including Cut for Time sketches, before they’re available on the Saturday Night Live website.
  • Swipe from clip to clip for a seamless, continual viewing experience.
  • Features a new video player that allows you to mark favorite sketches and share them via Facebook.
  • Explore and discover new clips with an intuitive recommendation engine. The more sketches you watch and like, the smarter the SNL App becomes in recommending videos for you.

“Saturday Night Live” debuted on Oct. 11, 1975, originally titled “NBC’s Saturday Night.” The original cast featured Laraine Newman, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris, and Chevy Chase.

SNL fans should definitely download this app. My only complaint is that it hasn’t been optimized for iPad.

NBC’s “SNL 40” special airs on NBC this Sunday, beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
