This GPS app begins with the ability to access Web maps. You have access to Google Maps, of course, but the app also integrates with TerraServer, OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap, X-Traverse, ArcGIS, NR Canada Toporama, and Federal Aviation Administration sectional charts. You can also import and use your own maps, since PathAway Pro supports BSB/KAP maps and nautical charts directly.
GPS track logging is available in the app, and is limited only by the amount of storage space your device has. PathAway Pro will track your movement even when your device is locked, keeping a map of waypoints to show your route. Want to backtrack your path to get home? The app will automatically show you the route you took and what path you need to follow to return to your starting point. All of the maps can even be downloaded to your device for offline usage.
The features of PathAway Pro don’t end there, though. You can even use the route planner to set which path you’re going to follow when hiking, quickly and easily setting multiple route points with a single tap. When you’re following your planned route, navigational alarms will let you know if you stray off-track. You can send your location to others, and monitor where your fellow hikers are on the map. PathAway Pro also includes a customizable dashboard with a compass, detailed trip statistics, and route position information.
PathAway Pro is available for $49.99 on the App Store. The app requires iOS 5.1.1 or later, and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. There are no ads or in-app purchases in the app itself, but PathAway Pro does support purchasing premium maps from X-Traverse. If you need a less feature-rich option, PathAway LE is available for $4.99 and PathAway Express costs $29.99.
