In most survival simulation games, you find yourself as an elite soldier battling it out with enemy grunts and snipers. That’s all well and good, but what happens to common civilians when the city is devastated by a civil war? Few, if any, games have even touched this interesting story, but now 11 bit studios has brought it to life in This War of Mine for the iPad.

Maintain your refuge

In This War of Mine, you don’t play as an elite soldier. Instead, you control a group of civilians struggling to survive in a city besieged and wartorn. You have to survive and build up your refuge despite a lack of food, medicine, or supplies, all while facing constant danger from hostile scavengers and snipers. It’s an entirely new angle in survival simulation games, and it truly is a breath of fresh air in the apocalypse genre.

Your civilians have their own thoughts and memories of how the city used to be.

Let your conscience be your guide

There are no good or bad decisions during war, just survival. This War of Mine challenges you to guide your civilians through making the best decisions that will influence their ability to survive. You might want to protect everyone in your shelter, but then again, longer-term survival might necessitate sacrificing some of them.

You'll want to help everyone, but sometimes you might have to sacrifice your conscience for survival.

A fun play

This War of Mine features gritty graphics and suspenseful background music. It’s sometimes a slow play, especially as you wait for your civilians to move around, but that often translates into very fun suspense as you hope they’ll make it to safety before it’s too late.

This War of Mine is designed for iPad only, and currently costs $9.99 to buy on the App Store.
