Yahoo Livetext: Who needs sound with their video?
For something a bit different when it comes to communicating with your friends and family, Yahoo has introduced a silent way to “video chat.” Yahoo Livetext – Video Messenger arrived on the App Store yesterday, July 30. The app brings video texting to users in an attempt to create a new experience.
What Yahoo Livetext is
You can sign up to use the app with either your mobile number or your current Yahoo account. After that, just find or invite friends with a few taps. Once you have connected, you can text the other person while live video is being sent between you. Basically, it is video chat without the “chat.” There is no audio involved and all messages written via text are displayed on the screen below the video portion.
What Yahoo Livetext is not
Yahoo Livetext is not like FaceTime or other video chat apps because there is no sound. There is also no group messaging available and no phone calls to be made. You will not see your conversation history, so you cannot go back to view messages from previous days. This means if you want to save something during that conversation, you better take a screenshot.
Overall thoughts
There will be varying opinions on this app, of course. Some will probably think it is a new and innovative way to communicate, while others may not see the point of it. Personally, I have to agree with what AppAdvice’s Brent Dirks had to say about this app. The idea of video communications is to feel as if you are in the same room with the other person, which obviously involves both seeing and speaking to them. However, and this is a big “however,” I can see people using it because it is unique and could provide a whole new trend for communicating.
Yahoo Livetext – Video Messenger is available for iPhone on the App Store. It is a free app, so give it a try and let us know what you think.
