Good games, especially games that center around a series of puzzles, are dififcult to define. How do you make them, and how do you follow up on them? Somehow, Fireproof Studios has developed a recipe for success in game development with its “The Room” series of games. The latest installment, The Room Three, brings together gorgeous graphics, an atmosphere that intrigues you, and mind-bending puzzles that are difficult but not too much so.
The first installment of The Room had you solving puzzles surrounding a box sitting on a table. In The Room Three, you’ll have a touch of that, but the box you play around with is only the beginning. The game encourages you to look in and around everything in the room, whether it’s a cabin on a train or a room within a large, mysterious castle.
An excellent story
You don’t have to pay attention to the storyline in The Room Three, if all you want to do is solve puzzles. However, the tale spun as you work your way through the game is a good one, and is well worth paying attention to. In some regards, you will have to at least acknowledge the story, as the mysterious Craftsman continues to leave you notes and letters, but it would be easy enough to dismiss those if you aren’t interested in that aspect of the game.
