For techies, the 5 best television shows to stream right now
Just how popular are sci-fi- or tech-related television shows right now? One of them, USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” just won the Golden Globe for best TV drama. That got us thinking, there seem to be a lot of tech-inspired series on the air right now. Here are five of the best.
“Mr. Robot,” USA Network
Elliot (Rami Malek) stars as a vigilante hacker who decides the world would be a better place by bringing down the world’s 1 percent by going after the Evil Corporation. To do so, he and his hacking group attempt to erase much of the debt in the world. Featuring mind-numbing twists, turns, and flashbacks, “Mr. Robot” also stars Golden Globe winner for best supporting actor Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, and Carly Chaikin.
Stream: All 13 episodes of the series’ first season are available to cable and satellite subscribers through the USA Now app. Beginning this spring, Amazon Prime subscribers can watch the episodes using the Amazon Video app. Season 2 of “Mr. Robot” begins later this year on the USA Network.
“12 Monkeys,” Syfy
If you enjoy stories about time travel, you’ll love “12 Monkeys,” based loosely on the 1995 motion picture by the same name. In the post-apocalyptic world of “12 Monkeys,” a deadly plague has decimated 93.6 percent of the human race. How can this be undone? Go back in time, of course.
Starring Aaron Stanford, Kirk Acevedo, and Emily Hampshire, “12 Monkeys” is a dark series, for sure. Still, it’s been a great ride so far.
Stream: The first episode of season one of “12 Monkeys” is available to stream via the Syfy Now app. The full season is available through multiple platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, and Vudu. Season two begins on April 18 on Syfy.
“Silicon Valley,” HBO
If you consider yourself a geek, you’ll love the comedy “Silicon Valley,” which begins its third season on April 24. Until then, it’s time to catch up on the goofy antics of the folks at Pied Piper, a fictional Internet startup trying to leave its mark on the digital world.
Stream: “Silicon Valley” is available to subscribers via HBO Now and HBO Go. You can also purchase episodes through iTunes and Amazon.
“Second Chances,” FOX
What happens when technology makes it possible to reincarnate humans? This question is answered in the newest series on our list. “Season Chances” stars Robert Kazinsky (“True Blood”) as a disgraced, 75-year-old ex-sheriff who’s brought back to life and given another chance as a 35-year-old. Techies should take a look at “Second Chances” if only to see and hear the Siri-like digital assistant that plays a central role.
Stream: “Second Chances” is available to stream through the FOX Now app. New episodes air each Wednesday on Fox.
“Sense8,” Netflix
This unique science fiction drama revolves around eight strangers from eight corners of the world that become mentally and emotionally linked. Created by Andy and Lana Wachowski, “Sense8” will leave you speechless thanks to its unusual mix of politics, identity, sexuality, gender, and religion.
Stream: The first season of “Sense8” features 13 episodes, each available to stream through Netflix. The second season arrives later this year.
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking for science fiction drama or geeky comedy, we think each of these five shows should leave you guessing and entertained through the cold, winter months.
