Me & My Choices – Play and learn to express your preferences, for kids with Autism and other Special Needs

Me & My Choices – Play and learn to express your preferences, for kids with Autism and other Special Needs

C.E.T - THE CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

The Me & My Choices application focuses on identifying the user’s personal choices in two modes, recording the choices based on selected areas of interest, and the possibility of sorting areas of interest based on whether they are liked or disliked.

The application encourages self-expression for children with autism and other special needs and offers people with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities an environment to practice personal choice and express opinions regarding concepts and activities in the surrounding environment, as chosen by the user and those working with him.
The rationale

Making individual choices, the selection of tasks, games, and expressing opinions about whether they are liked or disliked, is a basis for independent functioning and quality of life. Many individuals in special education frameworks are not asked about their preferences and choices when it comes to much of their daily routine. The use of Me & My Choices calls for work on a variety of areas, while practicing these important skills.

***What’s in the Application?
In the Me & My Choices application, users play a game of roulette centered on personal choices; they create a personal album that collects and records their individual choices, under two game options, “My Choices” or “My Likes and Dislikes.”
1. “My Choices” game
The roulette wheel has six different topics.

2. “My Likes and Dislikes” game
The roulette wheel is divided into six topics, each of which is divided into two sub-topics, “Like” and “Dislike.”

In both games initially the game can be played with the pre-set topics. However, by clicking on the “Edit Topics” button, the topics can then be changed or adapted in line with the user’s individual preferences. After spinning the wheel, a page opens, in the form of a treasure map, and here the user can save his choices. Different methods for entering content can be chosen – typing, recording, adding a picture, or adding a video clip.

***Why is the Me & My Choices application suitable for users with special needs?

1. Content – the application deals with personal choices and self-expression, so significant for users with special needs. The application is an open tool, and users can choose to address content that is relevant to them.
2. A variety of display modes for information, and multi-sensory learning – the information in the application appears using a variety of display modes (text, recordings, illustrations, photographs, and narrated texts). The various display modes support the users’ understanding and expression.
3. Independent work – the application is accompanied by clear explanations for all of the activities. This help is available to users at every stage, and assists in understanding the required actions.
4. Individual adjustment and parental control –Editing and deletion of existing albums can be blocked.
5. Design that is both clear and respectful – the application’s design is appropriate for children and young adolescents, and the graphics are designed to arouse interest, yet are respectful of them.

The Me & My Choices application is part of the Me & My series of applications, a series of interactive, game-based activities that allow the user to work alone or with assistance, and to function meaningfully in the area of personal choices. The aim of the series is to create personal albums in a game-like way, on the subjects of “Me & Myself,” “Me & My Body,” and “Me & My Choices.” The activities in the series encourage the development of individual identity, investigative abilities, the ability to make choices, independent work, sharing, and literacy.

We are certain that you will enjoy working together with your child on the application, and discovering new worlds of individuality.

Me & Myself - Learn to express yourself, for kids and teens with special needs.

Me & Myself - Learn to express yourself, for kids and teens with special needs.

C.E.T - THE CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Me & MySelf is an interactive album that stimulates the user to present himself, his hobbies and his
preferences, through various enjoyable activities.

The application will help kids and teens with special needs to express themselves, formulate their own life preferences, and practice making individual choices.

The application encourages involvement through games and creativity, adapted to children with a range of functional and cognitive levels, working independently.

In designing the app, emphasis was placed on adapting it to users with various levels of literacy – those who can read and write, and those who cannot. Users can type text, record sound, and use images and video clips to express their personal choices in each part of the application.

**The Me & Myself app allows interactive, creative activity under eight different topic headings relevant to the user:

• About Myself

• Me and my Family

• My Home

• I Wish I Was

• Things I'm Good At

• Things I Can Say About Myself

• Me and My Friends

• Moments to Remember

Each topic is divided into small working steps that together create interactive personalized pages in an album.

The Me & Myself album has two modes:
• Edit mode, in which the user can combine images, video clips, stickers, text and recordings, in keeping with the various topics and his own personal preferences. This editing mode can be locked, In the Parental Controls section, to prevent the user from accidentally deleting the album.

• View Mode, in which one can browse through an existing album, and decorate it with stickers. The complete album may be shared with parents, teachers and friends.

**The album framework allows independent, individualized work, and is accompanied by clear, easily-accessed explanations as to how to use all parts of the application.

“This is the richest app that I have encountered in the area of self expression. The application encourages the sharing of personal experiences, and allows self-expression combined with enjoyable games in an attractive, well designed virtual environment, all of which is accessible and adaptable. This is good news for special education” (Dr. Adi Neeman, Special Education).

The rationale behind developing tools for self-expression:

Children and adolescents with special needs (particularly those diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, individuals with communications disorders, and individuals with cognitive disabilities) usually find it difficult to express themselves independently. This difficulty affects the individual’s self-perception and recognition of his own uniqueness and strengths.

Most of them make very few personal choices, due either to the characteristics of their disability or the circumstances of their lives. In many areas, the decisions are made for them. This has implications both for the difficulty in making choices, when this is allowed, and for experiencing and practicing the making of effective choices.

Suitability for users with special needs:

• Personal Content – the application addresses the content areas of personal choice and self-expression, which are significant for users with special needs.
• Multi-sensory learning – Using diverse media to enable users of different learning styles and capabilities such as :Text, audio, images and video clips
• Encouraging self-expression and Independent work
• Personal customization: Individual adjustment and parental control
• Accessibility: the interface is adapted and accessible for special needs individuals with a broad spectrum of disabilities and levels of functioning.
• Detailed, respectful design. The design is adapted for kids, teenagers and adults.

We are certain that you will enjoy working together with your child on the application, and discovering new worlds of individuality.

Word Search Articulation

Word Search Articulation

Erik X. Raj

Practice your searching skills while working on your articulation abilities with this fun and exciting speech therapy game. Created by Erik X. Raj, M.S., CCC-SLP, Word Search Articulation is jam-packed with over 1,000 sound-specific articulation words that can be hunted for. These puzzles contain hidden words designed for speech-language pathologists to use with individuals who exhibit difficulty producing the following speech sounds: S, Z, R, L, S/R/L Blends, SH, CH, and TH.

Features:

-Tons of words: with just a tap of a finger, players can search for and practice over 1,000 sound-specific articulation words that are PERFECT for the speech therapy setting.

-Super versatile: play this FUN game with one other person, or play it with ten people (or more!).

-Child-friendly interface: simple AND intuitive, just the way it should be.

Information:

Word Search Articulation allows students to play hide and seek with their articulation words. At the start of each round, the given word hides in a grid filled to the brim with jumbled letters. In an attempt to discover the hidden words, children must concentrate and focus their eyes on the grid to spot those sneaky words. These puzzles demand great detective work because all of these words are fantastic at hiding. However, if a student gets stumped and is unable to find the hidden word, the ‘hint’ button is always an option. This could be pressed at any point during the word search and it causes the first letter of the hidden word to become highlighted. This child-friendly feature ensures that all students will experience success as they participate in this wonderful word hunt adventure.

Traditional speech therapy that focuses on improving articulation abilities can usually get stale and boring, but through Word Search Articulation, speech therapy can easily become an enjoyable competition that strengthens students’ attention, concentration, and pronunciation. It is the hope of this speech-language pathologist that by encouraging students to participate in this game, they will be able to practice their overall articulation in a way that can lead to fabulous gains toward mastering their speech therapy goals and objectives. Hooray!

The structure of Word Search Articulation is a departure from traditional articulation drill work and is effective for students ages 6 and up. With this game, clients have a blast challenging their friends and classmates outside of the speech therapy room, further practicing their articulation skills and thereby facilitating the sometimes difficult stage of carrying over newly-acquired skills. By playing Word Search Articulation with the client, paraprofessionals in the classroom and/or parents at home can reinforce the client’s skills while sharing an entertaining activity. Practicing communication skills in environments outside the speech therapy setting increases opportunities for generalization of communication skills.

In the past, word searches had nothing to do with speech therapy. Now, thanks to Word Search Articulation, word searches and speech therapy have been effectively combined (and I am happy to announce that they both live together in perfect harmony!). I guarantee that you will fall in love with Word Search Articulation and I invite you to use this game to spice up your speech therapy sessions. Regardless of when, where, or how Word Search Articulation is used within the speech therapy session, one thing is certain, children (as well as clinicians) will have a delightful time giving this game a try . . . and in the process, your students will continue to practice the correct pronunciation of their sounds at the word level.

Drillaby Pro Speech Therapy

Drillaby Pro Speech Therapy

SLP TechTools

Drillaby is a speech therapy game designed for SLPs to use for articulation drills. Drillaby is appropriate for kids in preschool through mid-elementary. The app is designed to give kids lots of practice opportunities while playing a motivating game. The object of the game is to get Drillaby through four different areas on an island and then home! The child must produce sounds correctly in order to get Drillaby on a boat and off the island.

Drillaby was designed by certified speech-language pathologists. This articulation game includes a choice of six sound groups: /k/-/g/, /t/-/p/, /v/-/f/, /sh/-/ch/, /l/, /s/ and /s/ blends. There are three levels of difficulty including words in carrier phrases.

Drillaby is an excellent complement to the SLP Minimal Pairs app for iPad, providing more words and levels of difficulty for practice.

A great benefit of Drillaby Pro is the way it reinforces homework between therapy sessions. Therapists can recommend a single sound group version of Drillaby, which specifically targets the appropriate sound for kids to work on when parents ask for homework ideas.

All sound groups can be presented in US, UK or AUS accents. Session records can be viewed for each student within the app or emailed as a .CSV attachment.

iMouf

iMouf

Speech Hardware LLC

Learn Sound Differences-

The purpose of learning sound differences is to develop awareness of what the mouth, vocal chords and ears do when learning sounds. There are more than one million persons in the United States who stutter, of which one half are children. Sound differences are the foundation upon which reading, writing and spelling skills can be developed.

Vocal and Mouth Feature-

Did you know that some sounds use the same mouth shape? Some sounds just need a little air, while other sounds need voice. Recruit iMouf and Twinkle Star to help children understand the features that make sounds.

Real Life Environments-

Finding time to address sound differences can be tough, so lets take learning to the grocery store, park, and swimming pool! Spend 5 minutes practicing speech sounds, and make learning fun on the run!

Dance and Rap-

Engage your whole brain in the learning process by dancing and rapping through the lessons. These songs stick in your head, and so will the content!

Record Own Speech-

Listening to your own speech increases self-monitoring skills and learning independence! Recording your speech helps identify the mistakes so you can practice making the sounds correctly!

Meet the Characters-

Twinkle Star: Teacher

iMouf:  Student. Believes in singing, rapping and dancing when learning.  He also likes to get outside and move!

The Lesson-

The lesson is a virtual speech therapy session. Each lesson helps to identify where your child is at in their speech development and what they can do to improve. You should spend a lot of time on these lessons if your child or student is struggling with reading, writing, spelling or saying the sounds correctly. Some therapists and teachers will spend up to three weeks on just two sounds. These lessons help children to understand how the mouth works during speech production and how the air feels while pronouncing sounds. When you teach sounds with tactile and visual stimulation you create a multi sensory environment in which the child/student can thrive. During the lesson we recommend a parent, teacher, or teachers aide to be present.

The Scenes-

We have developed 8 different scenes that most children are familiar with. The reason why we picked familiar scenes is so that parents/caregivers have the opportunity to practice the sounds in real life situations.  For example, if you are working on the P and B sounds you get to go to the zoo. Each scene is packed full of objects which iMouf will help the students to identify. When he is finished the child/student can find the target words listed at the bottom of the screen and record their own voice while practicing the target words.  You can stay and play on each scene for as long as the child/student wants to.  You can screen shot or print the scene to use at home or in school.

The JAM- Each scene features a JAM that highlights targets words and sounds in a musically relevant format.  During the JAM experience users will be able to see or read the lyrics while the song is playing. The purpose of adding the JAM button was to address needs of children/students who are able to read but may not understand sound discrimination. Rock on!
