Me & My Body – Know your body, for kids and teens with special needs

Me & My Body – Know your body, for kids and teens with special needs

C.E.T - THE CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

"Me & My Body" is an app that explores issues related to the body, encouraging self-expression and acquisition of basic concepts about one’s body.

"Me & My Body" includes play activities that help Special Education children to make personal choices. The activities are focused on getting to know the different parts of the body, examining the changes that occur with growth through imagination and creativity, paying attention to the sounds of the body and encouraging self-reflection about the user’s physical characteristics.

The "Me & My Body" app has been designed with the aspiration of empowering people with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities to make personal choices, relate positively to their body image and create constructive experiences.

The rationale

Most apps tend to focus on the subject of human anatomy or examine disease and pain. However Me & My Body offers a new way of looking at our body, empowering the users and enabling them to understand the value and capabilities of their body while making important personal choices. Games, and creativity aspects, help children on various levels of understanding to use the app independently.

What’s in the app?

The Me & My Body app includes creative, interactive activities on six issues related to the user's body: About Myself, My Body, Look How I Grew Up, With a Little Imagination, The Sound of My Body, About My Body.
Each topic is broken down into short and simple stages that together create an interactive page in the personal album.

The "Me & My Body" album has two modes:

1. Edit Mode: In Edit mode, the activities and choices at each stage of work are customized to the individual pace and
comprehension level of each user. In this mode, the user is prompted to combine photos, stickers, text and
recordings, according to the subjects and personal preferences.
2. View mode: In view mode, users can browse an album and decorate it with stickers. The complete album can be shared with
parents, teachers and friends.

Why is the "Me & My Body" app suitable for users with special needs?

1. Content - This app deals with personal choices and self-expression, a topic of great importance for users with cognitive disabilities and other special needs.

2. Diversity of data representation and multi-sensory learning – information in the app is presented in a variety of ways: Text, recording, illustrations, photo images and texts read aloud – supporting understanding among different levels of users.

3. Independent work – all activities in the app are accompanied by clear explanations and a help function to encourage individual working.

4. Customization and parental control – if users find the sounds distracting, the app can be operated in silent mode. The edit function can be disabled to avoid existing albums being deleted by accident.

5. Meticulous and respectful design – the app design is suitable for children and adolescents, and the artwork is interesting and respectful.

"Me&My Body" is part of the Me&My app series, a range of special education apps about personal choices that feature interactive activities and games that the users with autism and other special needs can do independently or with a companion. The purpose of the Me & My series is to enable users to create personal albums through play, around topics of "Me & Myself", "Me & My Body" and “My Choices”. The activities in the series encourage the development of self-identity,, selection abilities, independent work, cooperation and literacy.

We are certain that you will enjoy working together with your child on the application, and discovering new worlds of individuality.

Me & My Choices – Play and learn to express your preferences, for kids with Autism and other Special Needs

Me & My Choices – Play and learn to express your preferences, for kids with Autism and other Special Needs

C.E.T - THE CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

The Me & My Choices application focuses on identifying the user’s personal choices in two modes, recording the choices based on selected areas of interest, and the possibility of sorting areas of interest based on whether they are liked or disliked.

The application encourages self-expression for children with autism and other special needs and offers people with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities an environment to practice personal choice and express opinions regarding concepts and activities in the surrounding environment, as chosen by the user and those working with him.
The rationale

Making individual choices, the selection of tasks, games, and expressing opinions about whether they are liked or disliked, is a basis for independent functioning and quality of life. Many individuals in special education frameworks are not asked about their preferences and choices when it comes to much of their daily routine. The use of Me & My Choices calls for work on a variety of areas, while practicing these important skills.

***What’s in the Application?
In the Me & My Choices application, users play a game of roulette centered on personal choices; they create a personal album that collects and records their individual choices, under two game options, “My Choices” or “My Likes and Dislikes.”
1. “My Choices” game
The roulette wheel has six different topics.

2. “My Likes and Dislikes” game
The roulette wheel is divided into six topics, each of which is divided into two sub-topics, “Like” and “Dislike.”

In both games initially the game can be played with the pre-set topics. However, by clicking on the “Edit Topics” button, the topics can then be changed or adapted in line with the user’s individual preferences. After spinning the wheel, a page opens, in the form of a treasure map, and here the user can save his choices. Different methods for entering content can be chosen – typing, recording, adding a picture, or adding a video clip.

***Why is the Me & My Choices application suitable for users with special needs?

1. Content – the application deals with personal choices and self-expression, so significant for users with special needs. The application is an open tool, and users can choose to address content that is relevant to them.
2. A variety of display modes for information, and multi-sensory learning – the information in the application appears using a variety of display modes (text, recordings, illustrations, photographs, and narrated texts). The various display modes support the users’ understanding and expression.
3. Independent work – the application is accompanied by clear explanations for all of the activities. This help is available to users at every stage, and assists in understanding the required actions.
4. Individual adjustment and parental control –Editing and deletion of existing albums can be blocked.
5. Design that is both clear and respectful – the application’s design is appropriate for children and young adolescents, and the graphics are designed to arouse interest, yet are respectful of them.

The Me & My Choices application is part of the Me & My series of applications, a series of interactive, game-based activities that allow the user to work alone or with assistance, and to function meaningfully in the area of personal choices. The aim of the series is to create personal albums in a game-like way, on the subjects of “Me & Myself,” “Me & My Body,” and “Me & My Choices.” The activities in the series encourage the development of individual identity, investigative abilities, the ability to make choices, independent work, sharing, and literacy.

We are certain that you will enjoy working together with your child on the application, and discovering new worlds of individuality.

Me & Myself - Learn to express yourself, for kids and teens with special needs.

Me & Myself - Learn to express yourself, for kids and teens with special needs.

C.E.T - THE CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Me & MySelf is an interactive album that stimulates the user to present himself, his hobbies and his
preferences, through various enjoyable activities.

The application will help kids and teens with special needs to express themselves, formulate their own life preferences, and practice making individual choices.

The application encourages involvement through games and creativity, adapted to children with a range of functional and cognitive levels, working independently.

In designing the app, emphasis was placed on adapting it to users with various levels of literacy – those who can read and write, and those who cannot. Users can type text, record sound, and use images and video clips to express their personal choices in each part of the application.

**The Me & Myself app allows interactive, creative activity under eight different topic headings relevant to the user:

• About Myself

• Me and my Family

• My Home

• I Wish I Was

• Things I'm Good At

• Things I Can Say About Myself

• Me and My Friends

• Moments to Remember

Each topic is divided into small working steps that together create interactive personalized pages in an album.

The Me & Myself album has two modes:
• Edit mode, in which the user can combine images, video clips, stickers, text and recordings, in keeping with the various topics and his own personal preferences. This editing mode can be locked, In the Parental Controls section, to prevent the user from accidentally deleting the album.

• View Mode, in which one can browse through an existing album, and decorate it with stickers. The complete album may be shared with parents, teachers and friends.

**The album framework allows independent, individualized work, and is accompanied by clear, easily-accessed explanations as to how to use all parts of the application.

“This is the richest app that I have encountered in the area of self expression. The application encourages the sharing of personal experiences, and allows self-expression combined with enjoyable games in an attractive, well designed virtual environment, all of which is accessible and adaptable. This is good news for special education” (Dr. Adi Neeman, Special Education).

The rationale behind developing tools for self-expression:

Children and adolescents with special needs (particularly those diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, individuals with communications disorders, and individuals with cognitive disabilities) usually find it difficult to express themselves independently. This difficulty affects the individual’s self-perception and recognition of his own uniqueness and strengths.

Most of them make very few personal choices, due either to the characteristics of their disability or the circumstances of their lives. In many areas, the decisions are made for them. This has implications both for the difficulty in making choices, when this is allowed, and for experiencing and practicing the making of effective choices.

Suitability for users with special needs:

• Personal Content – the application addresses the content areas of personal choice and self-expression, which are significant for users with special needs.
• Multi-sensory learning – Using diverse media to enable users of different learning styles and capabilities such as :Text, audio, images and video clips
• Encouraging self-expression and Independent work
• Personal customization: Individual adjustment and parental control
• Accessibility: the interface is adapted and accessible for special needs individuals with a broad spectrum of disabilities and levels of functioning.
• Detailed, respectful design. The design is adapted for kids, teenagers and adults.

We are certain that you will enjoy working together with your child on the application, and discovering new worlds of individuality.

Speech Therapy for Apraxia - NACD Speech Therapist

Speech Therapy for Apraxia - NACD Speech Therapist

Blue Whale Apps Inc

The NACD Home Speech Therapist iPad app is a convenient, effective tool for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech/dyspraxia. It can also be used for:

• adults with apraxia
• speech therapists working with individuals with apraxia
• parents working with children with apraxia
• traditional articulation practice

"A useful tool for teaching CV phonemes to independent learners. It can be used by a speech-language pathologist in a school or clinical setting. It can also be used by parents to practice with their children at home."
- TUAW.com
http://www.tuaw.com/2013/06/27/nacd-home-speech-therapist-brings-apraxia-therapy-to-the-ipad/

What SLPs have to say...

"“It held my preschooler’s interest for about 10 minutes. She exhibits final consonant deletion (sic) and she willingly imitated the words. She enjoyed tapping the picture, imitating the word and swiping. Overall, it is a valuable tool for the Speech Toolbox and highly recommended.”
- Ricki Block, MS, CCC-SLP. Speech Pathologist since 1976 and certified member of the ASLHA.

“The syllables are arranged in a hierarchical order, which is hugely important. Parents can use this app to practice at home what was taught in therapy."
- Tatyana Elleseff, MA CCC-SLP at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

“NACD Home Speech Therapist offers a wonderful opportunity for organized and leveled speech production practice.”
- Jackie Bryla is a school-based SLPA in California.

Developed by the National Association for Child Development team, including a certified speech-language pathologist, the Apraxia app provides choices of different phonemes to target and moves through a progression of levels that challenge motor planning for speech.

Working at the syllable level, it begins at the production of single syllables and progresses through increasingly difficult production sequences all the way to the production of sequences of random syllables.

** FEATURES **

• Choose from 8 different consonant groups (for a total of 19 consonant sounds) to target.
• For each group, choose from 8 levels to practice
• Detailed instructions explain how to choose an appropriate consonant group and practice level.
• Move through a logical progression of 8 different levels for motor planning for speech.
• Illustrations and audio provided for each syllable.
• Option to repeat levels, reset, or move to next level.
• Can also be used for straight articulation drill for particular phonemes.

*** NEW PROGRESS TRACKING OPTION IN 1.3.1 - REQUIRES IN APP PURCHASE ***

About NACD
The National Association for Child Development is a unique organization with a unique approach to brain growth and development. Founded in 1979 by Bob Doman, NACD has helped parents enhance the development and function of their children for over 30 years. In its work with tens of thousands of clients, NACD has developed an approach to human development, the achievement of human potential, and the remediation of developmental, educational, and neurological problems that is based upon the gestalt of the individual. The efficacy of NACD's Targeted Developmental Intervention has been demonstrated with individuals from infant to geriatric, whose function has ranged from comatose to gifted. It is from this background and experience that the NACD team of neurodevelopmentalists and therapists, including speech/language pathologists, has created the NACD Home Speech Therapist line of speech apps.

Speech Therapy for Apraxia - ENDINGS

Speech Therapy for Apraxia - ENDINGS

Blue Whale Apps Inc

This app is a convenient, effective tool for:
• children with childhood apraxia of speech/dyspraxia
• adults with apraxia
• anyone working with individuals with apraxia, either therapists or parents
• can also be used for traditional articulation practice

As with the original Speech Therapy for Apraxia app, this app presents phonemes in simple syllables. However, this time the syllables have the consonant sound at the end, allowing for practice of final consonant production.

This app is a fun way to practice basic speech sounds and motor planning. Because the emphasis is on the individual’s production, the parent or therapist should be an active participant, providing the user with feedback, reinforcement, and additional modeling. This app is not intended for independent use by the child/student.

Speech Therapy for Apraxia - ENDINGS is intended to be the next step in a progression after the two-syllable words of our previous app, Speech Therapy for Apraxia – 2 Syllable Words has been mastered.

** FEATURES **
• Choose from 6 different consonant groups (for a total of 15 consonant sounds) to target.
• Detailed instructions explain how to choose an appropriate sound group and practice level.
• Moves through a logical progression of 8 different levels for motor planning for speech.
• Illustration and audio provided for each syllable.
• Option to repeat levels, reset, or move to next level.
• Can also be used for straight articulation drill for particular types of phonemes.
• Advanced features to track progress of each user and send email (requires in app purchase)

Developed by the National Association for Child Development team, including a certified speech-language pathologist, this app practices articulation at the word level and is a logical follow-up to the original syllable-based app, Speech Therapy for Apraxia. This newer version provides choices of different patterns of articulation within words and moves through a progression of levels that challenge motor planning for speech. It begins at the production of single words with easier patterns of articulation and progresses through increasingly more difficult production sequences all the way to the production of sequences of random words.
