The Best Photo App

The Best Photo App

Eric Welander

Created by the independent developer Eric Welander, The Best Photo App helps you take control of your photo library using a number of organization options and editing features in an easy-to-use interface. To be sure, it’s not meant to be a replacement for the Photos app. Rather, it functions as a supplementary app in which all changes you make are automatically reflected in the Photos app on your iOS device, and if you use iCloud Photo Library, they are also synced to all of your iOS devices.

Purely Vegan - Vegan Recipes for Vegetarian Diet

Purely Vegan - Vegan Recipes for Vegetarian Diet

Tyler Tschida

Purely Vegan is a no-frills, easy-to-use recipe app made, first and foremost, for vegans (folks who don't eat animal products), but also wholly available to non-vegans who want to spice up their otherwise traditional diets with vegan meals and dishes. Created by our very own AppAdvice author Tyler Tschida, the app was born and continues to be developed out of a need for vegan recipes that are neither expensive nor demanding but still flavorful and enticing.

Overcast: Podcast Player

Overcast: Podcast Player

Overcast Radio, LLC

Overcast is the latest app from Marco Arment, and it's one of the best podcast players on the App Store. The app has a simple and clean interface that does not ever feel cluttered, and it displays all of the necessary show information in the listing while showing off podcast artwork. Arment also has a curated section where you can find the best podcasts of any given category, and there are even Twitter recommendations from your friends if you choose to link your account. Searching for shows is fast and easy, and subscribing to a podcast is just a tap away. Or, if you just want to hear one particular episode, just add that episode! Overcast supports both streaming and downloading, so you can pick whatever you feel like doing at that particular time. The real magic behind Overcast are the playback features, which include Smart Speed to cut out silences in the audio so you waste less time, and Voice Boost that can make the audio louder than normal, which is great for shows with quiet voices.

Pocket Casts

Pocket Casts

ShiftyJelly PTY LTD

Pocket Casts is a great choice for those new to the world of podcasts, as it boasts an extremely attractive, intuitive interface that simplifies the process of finding, adding, and organizing your podcast subscriptions. The app’s design is so attractive, however, that it can be easy to overlook its flaws (which are few, but important). For example, Pocket Casts doesn’t support password-protected feeds, doesn’t allow users to download or stream single episodes of podcasts without subscribing, doesn’t display an episode list on the show’s information page, and opens links from show notes in Safari, not the in-app browser. However, it also boasts server-side episode checking, which means it refreshes your feeds extremely quickly and is less prone to hanging upon refreshing than other apps. Although power users may find Pocket Casts's lack of customization frustrating, it's a great choice for anyone who doesn't want to have to fiddle with multiple settings screens to listen to podcasts.
