Handpan, a handpan is a percussion melodic instrument belonging to the class of idiophones. The name is composed of the words "hand" - "hand", and "pan" - the name of the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago islands - steelpan.

Steelpan, (steel pan) - melodic instrument, which is a hemisphere of steel, on the inner surface of which are specially pressed areas - tonal fields. Each tonal field is tuned to a certain note. The number of notes in the steelpan can vary from several (bass steelpans) to 20-30 pieces. Steelpan appeared on the islands in the 20s of the last century and its history is as unusual and interesting as the history of handpans.

All handpans in the world today are "descendants" of an instrument called the "hang". Hang was created in Switzerland by a team of 2 people - Felix Rohner and Sabina Scharer in the process of experiments over the Trinidadian steelpan, as well as other metal instruments from around the world - Chinese gongs, Indonesian gamelan, bells, Indian ghatam, etc... The Gong appeared in 2000 and for 5-7 years was the only instrument of its kind on the planet.
