Spelling is one of the fundamental facts in English language. A slight misspelling for instance incest for insect is a fertile source of error that twists the meaning intended. The word insect means any of a group of small vertebrate animals with the body divided into three parts namely head, thorax and abdomen with three pairs of legs, and usually two pairs of wings. The word incest means crime of sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that their marriage is prohibited by law.
Many words such as council, counsel; accept, except pose problems. They are either frequently confused or commonly mis-spelt because they are nearly alike in spelling or pronunciation.
Moreover there isn’t any hard and fast rule for spelling or making up a word. Colonel is a good example of a spelling that has survived a change of pronunciation. The word from the French had two parallel forms, colonel, coronel, each pronounced in three syllables. For 150 years the word has been pronounced (kernel) from the coronel form, but spelling has kept colonel.
The pleural of ‘house’ is houses, but that of ‘mouse’ is mice. Such are the difficulties confronted by an average student. No matter what you are and what you do; precision is of paramount importance when it comes to writing good English. The way each of us uses our words determines to some degree how others rate us. The “Words Commonly Misspelled” application will certainly aid you in learning which is the correct spelling as well as preparing for the spelling bee.
