A Guide To Cydia - Applications/Tweaks

One of the best things about jailbreaking is that it lets you customize your iPhone in a huge variety of ways. You can do everything from theming your iPhone to making the animations ten times faster, everything is up to you.

WinterBoard (free)

Often the first package installed after a new jailbreak, WinterBoard allows you to apply themes to absolutely any part of the device, from the lockscreen to each and every individual app. There are literally thousands of themes on the Cydia store, and it’s as easy as downloading the one you want and selecting it in WinterBoard.

InfiniDock  ($0.99)

InfiniDock is an awesome application from one of the most famous jailbreak developers, Chpwn. It lets you scroll your dock horizontally, as you would scroll in between pages on the springboard. Brilliant for people who don’t like the look of folders and want a few more apps in the dock. You can set up to 10 apps to appear in the dock, although that looks a little crowded.

iFIle ($4.00)

I use this app every day, remember when you learned how to SSH? Well iFile lets you browse the root directory of your iPhone right on the device! It also supports video playback, zip files, the installation of debs, moving and renaming files and loads of other great features. A great app for a great price.

InfiniBoard ($0.99)

Another app from Chpwn, this lets you scroll your springboard vertically, so if you have a page per category of app, you can fit all of them on the same page. Sounds useless, but after trying it for a few days I found it to be very useful.

InfiniFolders ($0.99)

Yep, you guessed it; this app lets you scroll your folders. When I first installed iOS 4, I was disappointed at being only able to put 9 icons in my folders. This app lets you put as many apps as you like in the folders, meaning no more “games 1,” “games 2” folders.

SBsettings (free)

Another essential tweak, it, as the name suggests, lets you have settings on your springboard. It always used to annoy me having to exit the app I was in to turn on Bluetooth or adjust the brightness. SBsettings lets you access all the most common settings just by swiping the status bar. It also has support for nearly every other app on the Cydia store.

3G Unrestrictor ($3.99)

3G Unrestrictor allows you to turn off the limits that some applications place on themselves when you are on a 3G network. For example, with this app installed you will be able to: FaceTime over 3G, download apps over 20MiB over 3G, watch HD youtube over 3G, and really do anything that WiFi is normally required to do. Very useful if you need an app, say a map of the local metro, and you are only on 3G.

Cyntact ($1.00)

Cyntact lets you put contacts that you call regularly on the springboard. It places the profile picture on your homescreen, and all you have to do to initiate a call is tap on their profile picture. Great if you call someone often.

Voice Activator ($4.99)

This app lets you customise the voice control application to do anything. You can set it to open apps, play individual songs, absolutely anything you can think of. My favourite is saying (Pig) and watching Angry Birds launch.
