Early Apple AirPods Sales Are Huge Despite Supply Constraints
Early Apple AirPods sales figures suggest the truly wireless earbuds are a huge success, which is even more impressive given continued supply constraints. The new information comes from Slice Intelligence.
Between Dec. 13 and Dec. 31, 2016, Apple AirPods accounted for 26 percent of wireless headphone e-commerce revenue, which was more than any competitor. More impressively, the day Apple AirPods were released, Dec. 13, was the largest single day for online headphone spending for all of 2016.
Apple AirPods sales in December were dominated by male shoppers, who accounted for 85 percent of the total. Over one-third of the men who bought a pair of AirPods were Millennials. Among females, Boomers were the largest population, with a share of 38 percent.

The $159 AirPods were first announced at the iPhone 7 event on Sept. 7. At the time, Apple promised to release the truly wireless headphones by the end of October. They were delayed until December. Even then, they were in short supply and continue to be.
As of today, Jan. 13, new orders for the truly wireless earbuds show a ship date of “6 weeks.”
Given the continued supply constraints, I’m surprised that Apple AirPods were able to generate 26 percent of the headphone revenue in December. Imagine what the number would have been without supply issues?
