Logi BASE From Logitech Charges Your iPad Pro with Smart Connector
Brent Dirks covered the release of Logitech’s innovative new BASE charging stand last month. I recently had the opportunity to do a hands-on review, and the BASE works as promised. Rather than having to fumble around for a charger, you can just snap your iPad Pro onto the BASE. Your charging cable stays plugged into the back of the Logi BASE. A magnet guides your iPad into the BASE’s Smart Connector so it can begin charging right away.
The elegant Logi BASE looks like something Apple would have created. In fact, I’m surprised Apple didn’t. Its sleek form factor fits the Apple aesthetic perfectly. Unsurprisingly, Apple sells Logi BASE on its website.
Logi Base
This charging stand does what it claims. It charges your iPad Pro via the Smart Connector and holds your iPad up at an ideal angle for viewing. It’s an excellent companion for the nightstand, the kitchen or anyplace you want to charge and use your iPad. A magnet in the connector helps guide your iPad into place. Once the iPad is in place, it feels secure. The underneath side of the BASE is slightly tacky so that it won’t shift or slide around on a hard surface. The stand is stable and doesn’t ever feel in danger of tipping over.

Logi BASE is compatible with Apple’s Silicone Case or any case that leaves the iPad Pro’s left edge exposed, so it’s not necessary to use your iPad naked. As you can see in the photos below, mine is in the Pipetto case. It looks slightly awkward due to the attached cover, but it works fine.
Logi BASE doesn’t offer any options as far as color or viewing angle. It is just what you see in the photos. You cannot use it to charge your iPhone or any other devices you own; it’s only compatible with the iPad Pro line.
While the magnet in the BASE does guide your iPad into place, it’s not perfect every time. I never once missed during the day when I could see it, but sometimes late at night, after reading in bed, I had to try a couple of times before securing it into the charger. Of course, without the BASE, I fumbled with my charging cable a lot more.
I think the biggest quibble people may have with the Logi BASE is the price. At about $100, it’s not an easy purchase to justify, no matter how great it is at its job.
Bottom line
Logitech has designed a winner with the Logi BASE. It’s one of the few products out there that takes advantage of Apple’s Smart Connector technology. It’s a useful and polished charging stand, an ideal companion for any iPad Pro.
