Shot Online Golf: A Behind the Scenes Tour Around the Links

Earlier this month, Shot Online Golf launched on the App Store. Recently, we had the opportunity to discuss the game with the developer. Here’s what we uncovered.

What were your team’s primary influences when developing Shot Online Golf?

We tried to get the inspiration of the content from the elements that users liked on Shot Online, the legendary PC Golf MMO in the position to proclaim survivability and success for more than 10 years on the MMO market. We analyzed the physics in many 2D and 3D golf games while developing Shot Online Golf.

Do you need to have an interest in golf to get the most out of the game?

Of course, If you have an interest in golf and know the basic rules, the game will guide you through along with a familiar golf environment. If you are a real golfer or know more of the rules of golf and golf course, you would find it fun to discover how those elements are implemented in the game.

What specific tools and techniques did you use to develop Shot Online Golf?

We not only used Unity 3D engine as the basis of our game but also used our in-house development tools and libraries for the core physics and network technologies.

What does Shot Online Golf offer that gamers can’t get from any other golf title?

Shot Online Golf has tried to combine real golf and gaming elements than other golf games on the market. In doing so, we've decided to make the game feel like real life. In particular, we have tried to make the physics realistic, such as the occurrence of Magnus (a phenomenon that the trajectory temporarily increases according to the air resistance), over a certain distance. We continue to try to improve the game too.

How does the online element of the title work?

We have included some of the features of PC Golf MMO Shot Online such as popular courses, costumes, clubs series, and some of the physics. However, we have reinterpreted the strong features due to the different platforms.

Which challenges did you face during development, and how did you overcome them?

We put an effort to optimize the performance to ensure that it runs smoothly on devices with relatively low specifications for a long time. This is relevant in the Betting Challenge mode, which offers real-time content - we wanted to make sure to have at least tried optimizing the app to its full potential.

Which part of the game are you personally the proudest and why?

We are most proud of our Betting Challenge mode that uses the regular rules of golf and is best suited for short play sessions. We think this mode helps elevate Shot Online above other titles in the genre.

What tips do you have for people saying Shot Online Golf for the first time?

When you enter the tee zone, it is essential to view the course from a Top-view by touching the screen. This seems to be applicable in real golf. Also, if you do not have a club with a satisfactory performance, it's also helpful to rely on the items available in the game.

Do you have anything planned regarding future updates for the game, and if so, can you give us any details of what these might include?

Sure, we do plan to add more courses with various concepts and difficulty levels and prepare more Academy stages. Additional content for users who enjoy the Betting Challenge is also being prepared. So stay tuned for the further news!

Do you have any plans to bring the game to any other platforms in the near future?

Since we just launched the game on mobile devices, so we will focus on that version for now. However, Shot Online Golf does use a development engine that supports multi-platforms. So we would possibly consider implementing the game on other platforms depending on user’s needs and feedback.
