T-Mobile Doesn't Like AT&T's DirecTV Now Service and Here's Why
AT&T’s DirecTV Now service has been criticized a lot since it was first launched late last year. Not surprisingly, T-Mobile is now trying to use this criticism to its advantage.
When AT&T launched the DirecTV Now service back in December, T-Mobile tried being creative by offering switchers a free year of the new internet TV service. With DirecTV Now customers now complaining of frequent outages, T-Mobile is getting creative once again.
New T-Mobile customers who switched as part of the promotion are now getting a year of Hulu, as well as the DirecTV Now service. In announcing the news, the No. 4 carrier in the United States cites a recent report in the New York Post that declared DirecTV Now “a total disaster.”
John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile, explains:
It turns out DIRECTV NOW is barely watchable, but we’ve got our customers’ backs! So, every former AT&T customer who took us up on our offer now gets a free year of Hulu on us – and they get to enjoy it on a faster, more advanced network with unlimited data!”
T-Mobile has never been shy at finding new ways to attract customers, especially those from competitors. With the first DirecTV Now service offer, T-Mobile tried to convince AT&T customers to switch by offering them a product owned by the competitor. This time, the company criticizes that same competitor for offering a “total disaster,” while also sweetening the deal for recent switchers.
Brilliant, no?
Just last week, I explained the differences between the three over-the-top (OTT) internet television services, including DirecTV Now, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue. At the time, I noted the many growing pains associated with AT&T service. While I believe those growing pains are real, I also expect them to be temporary.
This is great news for former AT&T customers now using T-Mobile who now get a year of free DirecTV Now and Hulu, no?
