The Tech Media Minute: A Thunderbolt Display Brexit, Netflix May Go Offline

Offline viewing coming to Netflix?

Netflix subscribers may finally be able to download and watch shows offline as early as this fall, according to industry insider and Penthera COO Dan Taitz.

“We know from our sources within the industry that Netflix is going to launch this product … My expectation is that by the end of the year Netflix will be launching download-to-go as an option for their customers.” (Light Reading)

The Thunderbolt Display is dead

Apple has given last rites to the company’s Thunderbolt Display. Cupertino hasn’t updated the product since 2011 so its removal doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The question now becomes whether a new 5K model is coming this fall.

An Apple spokesperson would only note: “We’re discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display. It will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last. There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users.” (The Verge)

Barnes & Noble trades coffee for alcohol

From The Chicago Tribune, some interesting news: “Bookseller Barnes & Noble will test market four redesigned stores later this year that feature larger café areas offering wine, beer and an expanded food menu, as well as table service. The goal is to boost traffic to the stores and to grow food and beverage sales from just under 10 percent of the retailer’s total sales to a larger pillar of the business.”
