Thinking about the next wave of Apple betas

Did you download the first iOS 10 beta? You’re certainly not alone. Now you’re probably wondering when the second iOS 10 beta is arriving to squash some of the first beta’s bugs.

Past practice suggests that iOS beta 2 (along with new versions of macOS, tvOS, and watchOS) will arrive on Monday, June 27 or Tuesday, June 28. Until then, you’ll need to enjoy the bugs or downgrade to iOS 9.3.2.

TextEdit coming to iOS 10?

Back in 2014, it looked like TextEdit would be jumping from Mac to iOS. When iOS 8 arrived that fall, the app wasn’t included. That could change with iOS 10, which Apple introduced on Monday, June 13.

According to MacRumors, “during its What’s New in Metal, Part 1 session at WWDC 2016, Apple used an iPad to demo the graphics API’s new adaptive tessellation capabilities on iOS 10. At the 17:58 mark of the video, a TextEdit icon can be seen on the iPad’s home screen from the multitasking app switcher screen.”

TextEdit is a simple, open source word processor and text editor, first featured in NeXT’s NeXTSTEP and OpenStep. It’s been distributed on every version of OS X (now macOS) since Apple bought NeXT in 1997.

Apple says no to the GOP

Cupertino won’t be sponsoring next month’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio because of the presumptive nominee, Donald Trump. They are still planning to sponsor the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Politico notes, “While Apple isn’t the most active political player in the nation’s capital, the tech giant previously has backed both parties’ conventions. It provided about $140,000 each in MacBooks and other tech tools to the Democratic and Republican events in 2008, according to campaign finance records. Apple did not write checks to either party four years later, but it did lend products to both conventions in 2012.”

Facebook, Google, and Microsoft are sponsoring both national conventions.
