Whenever a company releases a Bluetooth speaker, others eventually follow, each slightly different, according to size. Ultimate Ears first introduced the UE Boom. When that proved successful, the company welcomed the UE MegaBoom. Last year, the saucer-shaped UE Roll arrived. Just in time for the warm, summer months, the UE Roll 2 is here.
We were one of the first companies to experience this new speaker. Here’s our take on this unique, but now familiar, device.
- Waterproof: IPX7 rated: UE ROLL can be immersed in liquid up to 1m for up to 30 minutes
- Pair up to 8 Bluetooth enabled devices – Connect up to two source devices at the same time
- Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery for up to 9 hours of battery life between Micro USB charges
The UE Roll ditches the cylinder design found on the UE Boom and UE MegaBoom. Instead, this portable device looks like a colorful UFO. This design works because of its small size, which measures just 135 mm in diameter with a height of 40mm. It weighs just 330 grams.
But the UE Roll didn’t come from outer space, although it would look great in the International Space Station. Instead, the UE Roll is intended for use near or in the water, as it’s waterproof with IPX7 certification.
That means the speaker can handle exposure from water of up to one meter for as long as 30 minutes. This makes the UE Roll suitable for indoor or outdoor use when it’s raining or snowing, or when there might be brief splashes of water. The shell is also dirt-proof and stain-proof, so you can get it muddy and then just rinse it off.
Ultimate Ears is so confident in the use of the UE Roll in water that each one ships with a UE Floatie. Yes, that’s its official name.
Sound, Power & Compatibility
With a 2-inch driver and two 3/4-inch tweeters, the pint-sized speaker brings 85 dBA of sound to your next pool party. This is a lot of power for such a tiny device, which we found impressive, especially when listening to music inside. Outside, the sound was equally robust. Again, from a device of this size.

The Roll is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery for up to 9 hours of battery life between Micro USB charges. The charge time is approximately 5.5 hours.

You can pair up to 8 Bluetooth-enable devices and connect up to two source devices at the same time. With the UE Roll app, you can wirelessly stream 2 UE Roll devices from one source. The wireless range of play is up to 30m or 100 ft.
The original Roll was released in June 2015. The newest model looks exactly the same on the surface. However, it provides 15 percent more sound and its wireless range is longer.
It ships with the UE Floatie, bungee cord loop, and charging cable. The UE Roll 2 is available in five colors: Habanero, Tropical Anime, Volcano, Atmosphere, and Sugarplum.
The Bottom Line
The UE Roll is a nice anywhere-you-go-proof wireless mobile speaker that comes in plenty of vibrant colors. It’s a great solution when relaxing by the pool or listening to tunes in your bedroom. In fact, we love it so much we’ve included it in our Best iPhone Accessories Gift Guide.
At $99.99, the price feels right.
The UE Roll 2 comes in a variety of style sand colors
