Monsters Rising ($3.99) by Nine Tail Studios is an action game that focuses on bringing down the human race. Meteorites have crashed on Earth, and they’ve caused the dead to rise. The ensuing zombie apocalypse may have brought the humans together, but they will soon find that there’s a deeper threat. Monsters have been waiting patiently for centuries for the chance to take over the world. Now, with the humans arrogantly thinking that they have defeated their biggest threat, the monsters are seizing their opportunity to strike.

You begin the game as Horse-Face. Great name, right? However, he’s a tough guy. You learn to fight the police that are coming after you while collecting shards of the fallen meteorite. Different levels have different objectives. So, pay attention to what your goals are.

As you complete missions, you can level up your monsters. Each monster has a unique skill tree. Don’t try to level up everything. Otherwise, your monster won’t be as powerful later on. Pick a skill route and stick with it.

You can also buy passive or active boosts with the shards that you earn during gameplay,or save up and purchase an additional monster that will accompany you on missions. Although these monsters can cost up to 6,000 shards, they’re easy to earn during your missions. It only took about 15 minutes for me to earn almost 1,000.

The app has a shard store where you can buy shards and a shard doubler boost, but I was unable to access these in-app purchases. The shard store would appear, but there would only be a black space where the purchases should be. Regardless, the game costs enough that there shouldn’t be any in-app purchases.

Although there are in-app purchases, the game was still pretty amazing. I loved the storyline and the switch from fighting monsters to being one. The graphics are pretty impressive, and the tutorial is thorough. If you’re in the market for a great action game that you could invest hours in, take a look at this one.
