Chicago Avenue Moon ($0.99) by Junecloud LLC, creators of the popular Delivery Status app, provides a great way to add a personal soundtrack to your life. Sound too good to be true? So did I, until I found out what a great job Chicago Avenue Moon does at doing this. Although walking while listening to music or observing your surroundings is often an enjoyable experience, Chicago Avenue Moon can turn an evening stroll into something quite exciting.

The app works by tracking your motion while you walk, including the speed of your strides, your direction, and your GPS location. After taking these factors into consideration, it will then string together a series of consecutive musical phrases that have been chosen out of 1,000 that come with the app. The music has been tuned to sound 3-D, and is stringed together in a way that makes it impossible to detect the point where each musical phrase begins or ends.

While I initially expected the app to be more of a gimmick, I was surprised to find that it has the ability to make you feel like you're in a movie while you walk. Speed up, and the music increases in excitement, intensity, and volume. Slow down, and it will taper off, becoming more mellow and less audible. Turn a sharp corner while keeping a brisk pace, and the music will take a surprising turn as well. Despite the small delay between your movement and the music, the changes in what you hear are so surprising that the delay is difficult to notice.

As I tested this app out on my morning walk and afternoon trip to the mall, I couldn't help but to grin every time the music so accurately reflected my movement. To make things even funnier, sometimes the changes in music would reflect the behavior of others by coincidence. The whole experience of walking while listening to the soundtrack is very immersive, and the fact that the music follows your movement makes it almost impossible to believe.
