Weather Live Gets Rereleased And Reloaded, But Is Upgrading Worth It?
Weather Live Reloaded ($0.99) by Apalon Apps is the successor to the original Weather Live, which is no longer available in the App Store. Weather Live has, for quite some time, been one of the most popular weather apps in the Store, having been featured by Apple on numerous occasions. When I noticed the release of the reloaded version, I knew that I had to check it out.
I was never a fan of the original Weather Live. It did not seem to have any appealing functionality, and the user interface was so horrible, literally looking like it came from a very outdated Android device. I know that it was kind of known for having a nice design, but it just did not feel right to me.
However, sporting a significant redesign, Weather Live Reloaded looks like a much more manageable app. The HTC Sense inspiration seems to be mostly gone, leaving behind a clean iOS 7-suited design. The app is still mainly based around widgets, which are customizable as we know them to be.
Weather Live Reloaded displays a large amount of information just as the previous version did, including the current temperature, what it “feels like,” atmospheric conditions, precipitation, and hourly and seven-day forecasts. Like any feature packed weather app, there are also maps with radar available to your disposal. Of course, the type and layout of the widgets that the info is displayed through are customizable in the app's settings.
Along with your current location, you can add as many locations as you like. These can be accessed through the locations menu, as well as swiped between. Fittingly, each location's background will update according to the weather's current state.
Finally, it goes without saying that the current temperature in your location can be displayed on an live icon badge. That's where the “live” component comes into play, as the current temperature will constantly update itself.
Instead of having free and pro versions as before, Weather Live Reloaded comes in one universal app. While this pricing system makes a lot more sense, I do not see why the developer deserves to charge for an iOS 7 version. Don't get me wrong, I am all for paid app upgrades, but Weather Live Reloaded seems to be missing the “reloaded” factor. While it does look and feel like a new app, this does not seem to be drastic enough to justify its rerelease.
If you have not yet purchased Weather Live, now is a good time to do so, as the app is ready for iOS 7 and now costs $0.99 universally. However, if you own the previous version of this app and are satisfied with the way that it looks, I don't see a reason to upgrade to the reloaded version.
Weather Live Reloaded is available as a universal download in the App Store for $0.99.
