Meadowland ($2.99) by Marten Jonsson is a puzzle game that is unique for the genre. Typically, a puzzle game imposes some sort of time limit or restricts how many moves you can make. The point is to answer the questions or solve the riddle as quickly as you can. In Meadowland, you’re encouraged to take your time exploring the area.

You are a faerie. The only object that you need to pay attention to in the beginning is the grimoire. This book shows you the missions that you’re going to complete, tells you how to control your faerie, and explains the magic tree. The grimoire is extremely important.

The meadow is yours to explore. A few key features are two floating rocks that have a house on each of them, a pond with fish, and a stone archway. When you’re done looking around, you can begin completing missions from the grimoire.

Usually, quests, missions, or tasks in games are outlined pretty specifically. Kill this many bad guys. Move to that location. Collect a set number of coins. In this game, you only get a picture of the finished product in the grimoire. You have to figure out how to get there.

It sounds difficult, but after struggling for a little bit, you learn to look for clues. Notice what time of day it is. Look for landmarks in the picture. Check for objects that weren’t there before.

As you fly around the quest area, you’ll usually hear a sound, like a chime, that lets you know that you need to use magic. In order for you to use magic, you need to tap on the faerie. It will then sing a song, and strange things will start happening.

When you’re done with your first quest, just go back to the grimoire to look at the second one. You can flip through the book to look at all of the quests. There are seven of them that you’ll need to complete. However, as you move from one quest to another, you’ll see that you’re not just completing random tasks. You’re actually helping a story unfold.

The app has beautiful graphics and backgrounds. The puzzles aren’t too challenging. I think that girls around the ages of 10 to 13 would probably enjoy this game the most. The story is adorable and sweet. I can easily recommend this game as a parent for older kids who want to solve some fun puzzles.
