Quirky App Of The Day: Pick Your Blocks Carefully In Squishy Cats

January 14, 2014

Squishy Cats (Free) by Korigame Entertainment LTD is a physics game that is pretty much the opposite of Angry Birds. It uses the same theme of wooden, concrete, and ice blocks that have to be removed. The difference is that you’re actually trying to help the cats perched at the top of the block stacks. You need to pick when and how you remove the blocks beneath them so that they land on the ground and don’t tumble into the water.

Don’t let the cute colors and graphics fool you. This is a tricky game. It’s in the physics-based genre due to the realistic effects of gravity on the cats. They’ll roll on a slanted block, tumble off of a precariously placed block, and bounce when the column drops too quickly. The cats immediately reminded me of how the pigs act in Angry Birds when you launch a bird at them.

There are six worlds and 140 levels that you can play through. Each level gives you a rating of one to three stars based on how many moves it takes you to finish. These star ratings are used to unlock new worlds. You can find out how many stars you need by tapping on the lock.

One of the things that I like about the game is how the tutorials are set up. Sometimes, it takes me a little while to figure out what a tutorial is describing. Let’s face it. Telling someone how to control a character is challenging. However, this game uses animated tutorials. You can see what you have to do instead of reading about it.

This game is free for a limited time. I don’t have any definite information about when the sale ends. Currently, the game doesn’t have any ads or in-app purchases. So, even if you’re on the fence about downloading this game, it would be a good idea to do it now and decide later if it’s worth keeping.

Sometimes the pretty pastel colors throw me off when I test a game. I find myself thinking, “But you look so cute! How could you be so difficult?” It takes me a little while to get over the adorable graphics and start playing the game like a grown up. Don’t make my mistake. Take those smirking cats seriously.

Squishy Cats is an iPhone app, and it’s available in the App Store for the temporary price of FREE!
