Go On An Underwater Adventure In Abyss: The Wraiths Of Eden HD

January 12, 2013

Abyss: the Wraiths of Eden HD (Free) by G5 Entertainment is another hidden object mystery game from G5 Entertainment and Artifex Mundi. Though G5 releases a lot of hidden object games, I most often enjoy those that come out of its pairing with Artifex Mundi, because they all have intriguing story lines and detailed puzzles to solve, two essential qualities of any good hidden object title.

This game is no different, taking players on an adventure under the sea. In Abyss, you will play as the fiancee of a famed underwater explorer, who has gone missing. Your job is to investigate his disappearance, exploring the sunken city of Eden which is filled with eerie demons and plenty of hidden objects.

As in all games of this type, the idea is to solve puzzles, figure out mysteries, and complete hidden object scenes. The game is divided into different areas, each of which must be explored for important plot items, which are used to move through the story line.

This is a mystery hidden object game, so you will need to find items in the environment and complete a wide variety of puzzles to progress. There are environmental puzzles, such as the ones that involve opening doors with keys, mini games, which are more involved, and hidden object scenes, where players will hunt down a list of items.

I don’t want to get too much into the controls, as it’s just tapping and dragging, and the puzzles are the same puzzles you will find in any game of this type. There’s nothing new that this game adds to the genre, but that’s to be expected from a hidden object title.

They are formulaic, and that is what fans of the genre enjoy. The object scenes in this game range on the easy side, but the mini games provide a sufficient challenge. If you have trouble, there is a guide that can be found within the game.

Like Dark Arcana: The Carnival, Abyss incorporates an alternative game that allows you to skip hidden objects if you so desire, by playing a game of dominos instead. This makes the game accessible to those who enjoy mystery titles but don’t like the tedium of finding hidden objects.

The game has a good amount of gameplay (it took me several hours to finish), along with 40 different locations, 16 hidden object scenes and 22 mini games. There are Game Center achievements, but I did notice when playing through that some of them were not functioning properly.

If you’re a fan of the hidden object or mystery genre, Abyss is a solid game to pick up. It has an engrossing plot line and the gameplay is what you would expect from any game of this type.

There are two versions of this game for the iPad and the iPhone. Though the game is listed as free above, it will cost $4.99 to unlock the iPad version of the game and $2.99 to unlock the iPhone version.
