Snapchat is getting into the hardware business in a big way. The social media giant recently announced Spectacles, basically a $130 pair of sunglasses that can also capture 10-second videos.

Arriving sometime this fall and available in three different colors – black, teal, and coral – the integrated video camera is designed to capture a full day worth of video on a single charge.

Using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, they will connect directly to Snapchat to upload a new circular video format. The video has a 115-degree field of view and can play in fill screen on any device in full screen and either orientation.

When recording, a light on the exterior of the Spectacles will illuminate to easily show others that you are capturing video.

A hit or a miss?

All joking aside, Snapchat’s popularity with younger mobile users is astounding, and continues to grow.

The app has more than 100 million active daily users. And on any given day, the app reaches 41 percent of 18-to-34 year olds in the United States. As you probably know, that demographic is especially coveted by advertisers, and is a major reason the company is now valued at more than $20 billion.

So while us relatively old fogies might laugh at the Spectacles, they are reasonably priced, somewhat fashionable, and may just take the company now known as Snap Inc. to even greater heights.
