Gulan – A Practical Tool for Orthodox Church Chanters and Readers
The Gulan application was created for the placement and convenient use of liturgical-hymnographic collections edited by St. Giorgi Mtatsmindeli (XI century).
In this first version, the app includes the Saint’s testament, the eight-tone cycle "Momihusenen" and "Ufalo-Gaghadkavsa", with more genre groups from Parakliton to be added periodically.
Beyond being a digital archive, Gulan serves a practical purpose for both Orthodox chanters and readers. Orthodox worship is a complex structure, with the day’s readings and hymns scattered across different books. The app simplifies this process by:
Automatically calculating the correct text for each day based on the weekly cycle and the 8-tone liturgical system.
Providing full readings for the day’s services.
Attaching the corresponding musical notation for each hymn.
Offering audio playback of the chants for practice and study.
In Georgian liturgical tradition, the word gulan refers to a collection of liturgical books, and this app brings that tradition into the digital age—making it easier to prepare, learn, and participate in the services.
