With this app, we hope to provide inspiration and tips for those of you who are interested in training people with the neuromuscular disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is aimed at parents and carers of children with SMA and those who have SMA themselves. But also, other people around children with SMA who are involved in their training.
The app consists of simple exercises that can be done in the home environment. The exercises have been chosen based on level of function and age. The functional levels we have used are whether the child can sit with or without support, and whether she/he has the ability to walk independently (non-sitters, sitters and walkers). The exercises are also aimed at certain ages, but can of course also be used if you are older or younger if the movement needs to be trained. Some exercises require that the child understands instructions, so you will have to make an assessment of whether an individual exercise suits the child.
The app includes suggestions on how the exercises can be made easier or more difficult, should the degree of difficulty need to be adjusted. We have deliberately not included any information about how many times, for how long or how often the exercises should be done. The child’s strength and stamina must be the determining and guiding factors here.
In several of the exercises, we recommend that toys are used to entice the child to take part in and carry out the exercises. Always make sure that the child is able to get hold of her/his toy in the end. It is important that the child feels that the effort required is worth it. It is also important that the exercises are safe. Make sure the risks of the child falling are minimised by remaining close by, and being prepared to provide support if needed. And finally, but perhaps most important of all – the exercises should be fun!
