Recent medical research indicates that changes in your heartbeat and electrocardiogram (ECG) may suggest a developing viral infection.

The Apple Watch Series 4 and above can measure these parameters, which may help healthcare professionals and patients during viral outbreaks such as COVID-19.

In a collaborative study between investigators from the University of California Los Angeles and Case Western Reserve University, we have designed TRACE COVID-19 (Trackable Electrocardiographic Changes in COVID-19), a study that will monitor your heart rate and ECG and allow you to record symptoms (such as fever, shortness of breath, or coughing). Further, we will allow participants the opportunity to enter whether they have tested positive or negative for COVID-19.

The goal of the study is to identify whether changes in these measurements can help identify people who are more likely to have active COVID-19 and who should seek formal testing.
