Don't Be Up A Creek Without An iPhone

June 18, 2010

Row, row, row your phone! Designers Pirata London have introduced a new free game title which expands our ideas of what the iPhone can do. New app Boat Race lets iPhone and iPod Touch owners race side-by-side multiplayer in a new and exciting way. Players use their devices as motion controllers, like the Nintendo Wiimote or the recently announced Playstation Move, to control their boats on the Pirata London web site. Each player loads the free app from the App Store, then visit the website on a laptop or desktop computer. Each player then takes a picture of a special QR code on the site to join the game. The iPhone screen will then show a set of boat oars and the computer screen will show your boats, ready to race.

To race, players hold their devices in both hands and make the same motions as if they were rowing a real boat. The faster they row their virtual oars, the faster their boat moves on screen.

While technologically it's impressive, it still has a lot of negatives in other areas. There is only one short race, no customization, no leaderboard and can only be played with two players. This is something you will download just to experience and show your friends, but it is doubtful you will ever spend hours on this title. However, since it's free, there is no real downside in taking this ship for a cruise. Boat Race is available now for free, on the Apple App Store. [via Pirata London]
