Jailbreak Only: Want To Hide iOS Apps That Don't Support Multitasking?

June 27, 2010

We know it and we love it: one of the best, and most important features of Apple's iOS 4 update is multitasking. Now, on our iPhone 3GS or 4 handsets, we can complete a variety of tasks in the background, we can fast-switch between apps, and we can bounce in and out of applications that remember where we left off. However, the problem current iPhone multitaskers face on a day-to-day basis is that not all apps multitask. Some haven't yet been updated - and others may never gain that ability. This can be annoying to deal with, especially once you've come to view multitasking as being an integral part of the iPhone's operation. What we need is some way of hiding these "monotasking" apps, so they just don't get in the way. Fortunately for jailbroken users, Cydia has a solution.

Not long ago MacStories came across Remove Recents, which is available for free in the Big Boss repository. This handy tweak prohibits non-optimized iPhone apps from jumping into the quick launch dock - and makes life a whole lot easier. Once Remove Recents is up and running, you're only going to see apps that can actually multitask enter the dock. Initially this only included Apple's own iPhone applications, such as Safari and Mail. But over the last few weeks, developers have been submitting updated versions of their applications, and now many apps support multitasking in iOS 4 - making Remove Recents a far more useful application. If you're a jailbroken iPhone 3GS or 4 user, head over to Cydia and check out Remove Recents. It's probably going to make things a lot easier - at least until every app you need has the ability to multitask.
