Instapaper Updated: Retina Display Graphics, Fast App Switching, Page Swiping Added

June 28, 2010

The simple-but-great bookmarking tool, Instapaper, is a wonderful app for saving web pages to your iDevice for offline viewing at a later time. The universal application (for iPhone/iPod touch, iPad) is packed full of great features (check out our review to find out more) - and now, with an update to Instapaper (2.2.4) having been released recently, the already acclaimed app has gotten a whole lot better. So what's new? iPhone 4 owners will be pleased to know Instapaper has been prettied up for the Retina display, and now everything in the app looks crystal clear. The updated application also supports fast app switching (iPhone 3GS and 4 running iOS 4 only). Additionally, users can now swipe to change pages (iBooks-style) in both the iOS 4 and iPad version of the app. Lastly, a few bugs have been fixed, and OAuth support for Twitter has also been added. Along with these additional features, the application's name has also changed. From now on, "Instapaper Pro" will be referred to simply as "Instapaper", with the free version aptly being renamed "Instapaper Free". One negative aspect of the update is the lack of a fix for password protected Instapaper accounts running on an iPhone 4. There is a known compatibility problem between the app and the iPhone 4, which makes the password box render incorrectly, leaving it unusable. The app's developer, Arment, has stated that a pending update (2.2.5) will fix this issue as soon as Apple approves it. For now, you can get around this issue by removing the password from your Instapaper account - but of course, if you decide to do this, do it with caution. Be sure to check out Instapaper in the App Store now. Let us know how the update works for you in the comments box below.
