Now You Can Watch Your 401k With Your iPhone

June 28, 2010

If your employer provides a 401k retirement savings plan through Fidelity Investments, we have some good news for you. Fidelity Investments, the #1 provider of workplace retirement plans, has always tried to give its customers simple and easy access to their retirement accounts. In recent years, like many companies, that access has been through their website (fidelity.com). In February, they added the Fidelity Investment app to allow individuals to monitor their retirement plans. The app was limited in use to only those who had accounts directly through Fidelity. Customers who worked for large corporations which had customized plans, were still limited to the Fidelity website.

Now, Fidelity has updated their app to fill that gap. While there are other financial apps like Mint which allow monitoring your plan balance, the Fidelity app goes further. In addition to checking plan balances, users of the Fidelity app can perform activities like researching their investment options and even make trades. While the Fidelity app doesn't include all the bells and whistles a serious stock trader would want, it's more than sufficient for your average retirement investor.

In the recent past, few people would be excited about an app that lets them watch their retirement plan shrink. Now, with the stock market active and retirement plans returning, this is a nice app to have.
