Skobbler US: A Free Turn-By-Turn Voice Navigation App

June 10, 2010

Looking for a totally free turn-by-turn voice navigation app? Then Skobbler US might just be the app for you. The application works much like Wikipedia, allowing the users of the app to edit their own neighborhoods directly themselves, hopefully increasing the content that application has to offer whilst maintaining accuracy. But does it work? Judging by the reviews, I'm inclined to say no. Although Skobbler has a three-star average rating for the current version, many of the reviews posted are essentially very negative - with the only positive the app has to offer being it's price. Yet for many users, given the choice between a paid reliable app, and a free not-so-great app such as Skobbler, paying for a decent app seems to be the most desirable option. One user, Ricky_77, summed up the general opinion perfectly. He said:
Not as reliable as a paid application with proper maps from renown providers. It will take a while to match a paid application with decent maps. If you don't mind to drive in circles occasionally, then any app will do. If one is looking for reliability and accurate route calculations, I don’t recommend a free application.
So the conclusion? By all means try out Skobbler, give it a go and (hopefully) it might work for you. But don't expect much, if anything at all. And if you do want a reliable navigation app, something like Tom Tom is probably a safer bet.
