If you were a child (or had a child) during the nineties, then the now-infmaous picture books,
Where's Waldo? and
I Spy will have
lovingly frustrated you to no end.
Now, alongside their more adult counterparts who have taken residence in Apple's iBooks app, these much-adored children's books have made their way onto the
iPad, embracing the digital realm in all its HD glory.
Where's Waldo has recently made its HD debut on the iPad (as of June 15) and, as you can imagine, it looks pretty
stunning.
An awful lot of care has been given to this app - much like
iSpy Spooky Mansion, another book-to-iDevice port which centres around a try-and-find-it game. Once again, the iPad's HD screen has been utilized with this gorgeous app (released June 16) - more so even than Where's Waldo, as the world of Waldo is of course cartoon-based.
I Spy allows for a bit of pinch-and-zoom action, which greatly helps you thoroughly search out your surroundings, whereas Where's Waldo prohibits this - presumably because it would make the game
too easy.
Essentially, both applications are a heck of a lot more than just try-and-find-it games, which is what the books themselves are. Where's Waldo incorporates animation into the game, and I Spy reads out riddles for you, and also includes pinch-and-zoom functionality.
Additionally these are apps that both adults and children alike will enjoy. They look great on the iPad's screen, and only further successfully edge the device towards the electronic book market, which seems to be one of the many pies the iPad has its Apple-branded fingers buried within.
