WWDC 2010: Steve Jobs Announces New iPhone 4
Steve Jobs has just announced the release of Apple's new iPhone handset: the iPhone 4
Speaking live from Apple's Keynote event, which is taking place now in San Jose, California, Jobs stated that the device is going to be called the iPhone 4, and that it will go on sale June 24th (with preorders starting from June 15th).
Here's what we know so far:
- The iPhone is powered by an Apple A4 chip
- It uses MicroSim
- The battery is bigger - 40% better battery life. This gives 10 hours of wifi browsing, 10 of video, 6 of 3G browsing, 40 of music, and 300 on standby
- iPhone 4 is 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS
- It comes with a front facing camera
- 5MP camera with LED flash, entirely new, says Jobs
- HD video recording at full 720p
- iMovie for iPhone - in iPhone video editing - available for $4.99 (does not come with iPhone)
- The primary structure of the phone are three stainless steel bands
- Double microphones for noise cancellation
- High pixel density: 326 ppi
- Scratch resistant glass
- Comes with iOS 4 - more info below
- iBooks for iPhone
- Video calling
- The iPhone 4 goes on sale June 24th. Preorders start on June 15th for US, France, Germany, UK and Japan./ Shipping to 88 countries by September.
- Video Out: support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable (cables sold separately).
As far as we can see, Apple's new iPhone 4 seems to be perfectly in line with the handset that was leaked.
Steve is pushing the resolution of the new iPhone, which is impressive. He states:
iPhone OS 4 automatically converts text to higher resolution
This is something of a relief, with text within already existing apps not appearing blurred or unfocussed on the new iPhone 4.
HD video recording looks to be something of an absolute treat: full 720p HD recording, with editing through iMovie for iPhone (will be available from the App Store for $4.99). You can grab and trip clips simply by touching, along with the ability to add themes, transitions, and tiles to your HD recording. After presenting iMovie, Jobs went on to show the Keynote audience a HD video he'd shot and edited solely on his iPhone 4.

Jobs announced that the iPhone will come with iOS 4 - Apple's new operating system for iPhone and iPad. He stated:
