AntennaGate: The Surprising Data Behind The "Death Grip"

July 16, 2010

Speaking onstage at Apple's "AntennaGate" Press Conference, Steve Jobs has just revealed the interesting data behind the well-publicized iPhone 4 antenna issue. After explaining that all Smartphones have "weak spots", Steve went on to tell us that a minute 0.55% of iPhone 4 owners were bothered enough by the "antenna issue" to call up AppleCare to discuss the problem. Which means that out of the 3 million iPhone 4 owners out there, only 16,500 phoned AppleCare about the issue. And what's more, only 1.7% of AT&T iPhone 4 owners returned their phones. Pretty small, don't you think? Well, it seems even smaller when you compare it with the initial return rates for the iPhone 3GS - which was 6.0%. This means that the return rates of the iPhone 4 are one third of the return rates of the 3GS, laying further discredit to the belief that iPhone 4 owners are disappointed with their handsets. So only 51,000 AT&T iPhone 4 handsets had been returned to Apple at the time of the "AntennaGate" Press Conference. Lastly, Steve finished the data section of his presentation by telling the audience that the seemingly-unusable iPhone 4 drops less than one call per 100 calls when compared with the 3GS. Less than one. Which is absolutely nothing. So here's the data Steve has just presented:
  • AppleCare data = 0.55%. Just 16,500.
  • AT&T return rates = 1/3 of 3GS. 51,000.
  • Drop calls = < 1 more per 100.
We'll be posting throughout the conference, so keep checking back for regular updates!
