CinemaFX: Does More Than iMovie, But Takes A While To Do It

July 18, 2010

If you've got an iPhone 4 and enjoy playing around with its HD camcorder, you may have downloaded Apple's iMovie for iPhone application. And, if you have, you'll know the app itself is pretty good - albeit basic in certain areas. If you find this frustrating, you might want to check out CinemaFX for Video; an app that allows users to add quite a few nice effects to the videos they've recorded on their iPhone 3GS or 4 handsets. Before we talk about CinemaFX's one major downside (rendering time), let's take a quick look at some of the app's great features. The $1.99-app allows users to stack up to three effects together - and lets them preview their edited video against the original, to see exactly how the effects have altered the video footage. These effects may also be adjusted, meaning users gain precise control over the edits they make.

Footage may be recorded in-app, or added from an iPhone photo album. Once edited, videos may then be exported to a computer at maximum resolution. Additionally, users can upload their creations to YouTube - and iPhone 4 owners have the option of uploading in HD. The app comes with two effects packs (Standard and Cinematic), and both include a wide variety of effects to use. However, if you desire more, the option to purchase more packs in-app is available (Toycam and Vintage, each $0.99). Now, let's talk about the downside to CameraFX: rendering time. Although the effects are great once added to your video - and there's a lot to add - the actual process of adding them takes quite a while. It's not a big issue by any means; just something potential buyers of the app might wish to be aware of before spending cash on the app. This issue hasn't stopped CameraFX from gaining a great many five-star reviews. And, as the app supports multitasking, users can let the rendering process take place in the background, making it quite painless. Be sure to check out CameraFX in the App Store now! And let us know how the app works for you in the comments box below.
