Communicator App Beams Back Into The App Store
July 12, 2010
While "Star Radio Communicator" was pulled quickly after it launched, a year later this Star Trek app has beamed back into the App Store with a new name and updated features.
Two major futuristic inventions from Star Trek, the personal communicator and the PADD, have become reality as the iPhone and the iPad. However, Star Trek apps for the devices they inspired have been few and far between. To help fill that gap, David Daves and Anton Angokhin created an application that replicated a communicator from the original Star Trek series. CBS found out about the app and sent a "cease and desist" letter for violating the prime directive of copyright infringement and the app was quickly pulled.
While these two entrepreneurs may have feared being sent to Rura Penthe (a Klingon penal colony), CBS had mercy on them and decided to work out an official license agreement. They revised the app and now, a year later, it has made its triumphant return to the App Store as 'Star Trek Original Series Communicator.'
The app features the look of the original prop, along with sound effects and quotes from the original series. When you start the app, the communicator appears closed. A quick flick of the wrist triggers the sound and animation of the communicator opening. Once in the app, you can play sound effects, dial a number and even access your phone book to call friends. You can even make the communicator appear to receive an incoming hail.
At $2.99 this app is not for everyone, but if you've read this entire article, then it's probably for you. However, if you're still not ready to boldly go download this app, check out the full story and an interview with the creators at iPhoneSavior.com.
