EpicWin: GTD With An RPG Twist

July 9, 2010

In the long run, to-do lists have never worked for me. I've managed a day, maybe two, and then it has all come crashing down. I then go back to organizing myself without my iPhone, inside my head, where tasks often get forgotten and sometimes never, ever completed. It's a fact that I've come to understand and accept - much like those around me, who know that sometimes I'm prone to being generally disorganized. But now, thanks to a recent find by MacStories, there might just be some hope. An upcoming app called EpicWin plans to change the way we interact with to-do lists on our iPhones by adding an RPG twist. That's right, I said RPG. Here's how it works: You create a to-do list inside the app, fill it to the brim with mundane, boring tasks that you don't really want to complete. What EpicWin does is add a variety of incentives for completing the task. Incentives take the form of loot, XP, and eventually the ability to level up a previously created character. This is how the developers, Redbox and MrFungFung, have put it on EpicWin's site:
"EpicWin is an iPhone app that puts the adventure back into your life. It’s a streamlined to-do list, to note down all your everday tasks, but with a role-playing spin. Rather than just mentally ticking off your chores, completing each one improves and develops your character in an ongoing quest to level-up, gain riches, and develop skills. By getting points for your chores it's easier to actually get things done. We all have good intentions but we need a bit of encouragement here and there. Doing the laundry is an epic feat of stamina so why not get stamina points for it?!"
Sounds amazing, don't you think? And it's not really that I'm the RPG-playing type, because I don't have a WoW account and I gave up on FarmVille months ago (despite the recently released iPhone app). The idea of getting something for completing chores makes this app extremely appealing to me. So far no definite release date has been set, though the developers have said via EpicWin's Twitter account (@epicwinapp) that it'll probably be released in about a month's time. So there isn't long for us to wait! In the meantime you can check out EpicWin's pre-release trailer below. And don't forget to let us know what you think of this app's unique concept in the comments box below.
