FaceTime Coming As An App For All Your iDevices?

July 19, 2010

After the recent revelations that FaceTime may be available on the next iPod touch (based on email addresses), 9to5mac managed to figure out more details by searching through the newly released iOS 4.1 SDK.

On top of confirming the previous rumors, they reveal that users will be allowed to identify themselves using usernames, just like in Game Center. Furthermore, the system will support multiple email addresses for your FaceTime account. You won't have to share the same email address with all your contacts. FaceTime might also be getting an app of its own in the near future, featuring the icon above.

All of this is essential to make FaceTime on the iPod touch a reality. Seeing it already present and ready in the SDK is a very good sign. Using emails and usernames instead of phone numbers will definitely help in making FaceTime cross-platform compatible (it's an open standard). Who knows, Apple might very well provide us with its own VoIP service soon.

What I'm waiting for is iPhone to desktop FaceTime. Now that Apple is done with Antennagate, this shouldn't take too long right?
