Fraudulent Developer Now Removed From App Store

July 11, 2010

Following our earlier post regarding a second successful takeover of an iTunes section by yet another rogue developer (this one operating under the name of WiiSHii), 9to5Mac has just reported that the developer in question has been completely removed from the App Store. Several users recently reported that their accounts had been compromised and used to purchase applications developed by WiiSHii without their permission - with some losing hundreds of dollars to the fraudster. As a result, WiSHii's applications rocketed up the App Store's Travel section chart, meaning that a great many appeared within the top 100, as you can see in the screenshot below:

It does appear the rogue developer has now been banished from the App Store, and the corrupted section - Travel apps - is back to normal, meaning iTunes is once again a safe place to browse, for now. As mentioned, this is the second successful "hacking" of the App Store, with the first taking place earlier this week and affecting the Books section of iTunes. Even though Apple managed to deal with both issues pretty quickly, it wouldn't be a bad idea for us to keep checking our payment histories regularly, just in case another copycat comes along.
